4 Types of Desks for Home Office

Desk For Home Office | Your Casa Concept

Back at the office or not, most of our homes have some form of area or a room dedicated just for work. What I learnt about working from home for the majority of 2020, is that it can be a total grey space between rest and work. Some days I would clock in too much hours. While other days would be full of distractions with minimal work done.

Having a dedicated space is important for you to get in the zone and also for others to know that the moment you are sat at your desk, it becomes a silent ‘do not disturb’ understanding. Unless, if your attention is truly needed, of course.

The psychology behind a dedicated workspace at home is as such, not simply for aesthetic purposes only.

The one item of a home office that is particularly important is: the desk. The ideal desk should be one that fits what you require and one that is able to fit into the space of your home office.

Here are some desk recommendations to ensure you keep up with that productive working practice at home.

WHICH DESK ARE YOU

Anything you buy for your home should be personal. Designs that fit your personality.

Desks have increased their range from the traditional bulky ones to sleek and slim ones that are more space efficient, catering well for smaller homes.

Some of the types of work desks are as such:

  • Corner desk
  • Adjustable desk
  • Floating desk
  • Writing desk

.. And the list might actually be longer, (to my surprise).

CORNER DESK

Corner desks are especially good for someone who needs a space meant just for writing or drawing and one area specifically for the computer. In a way, it is a great piece to make your space look less crammed.

Slide it into a corner, preferably near a window. There IS a comparative difference from planting your desk near a window to just any corners of your wall. You might feel ‘stuffy’ from having to face not one, but two walls while you work (as if being contained in our homes is not enough). Therefore, fresh scenery is always appreciated, whether you live in the suburbs or in high rise apartments.

However, be wary of where you place your computer/laptop. You do not want the glare from the sun on your screens. That can be highly distracting and cause difficulty in seeing whatever is on them.

Simple L-Shaped desk like the one above is designed to fit snugly into a corner of your home. This is an easy-to-assemble desk with a laminated white marble top and gold framed legs. It’s a pleasing look, a refreshing one. Not many Amazon desks offer a table that is not in the shades of brown, so this truly caught my eye.

One of the most talked reviews of this particular desk was how impressive the table space was for a table at this price.

It comes with a monitor shelf too. Study enough to place all your office setup – even a printer, if I may! A perfect addition for smaller spaces.

ADJUSTABLE DESK

The downside of working from home is comfort. Too much of it. When you step out of your home to go to work, you are clocking in your daily steps. Walking is not a strenuous exercise but a useful one for our health.

Sitting for too long in a day is never good. It gets worse overtime simply because you use considerably less energy. Infact, research showed that sitting for more than 8 hours a day coupled with physical inactivity will increase health concerns like heart diseases and high blood pressure.

Adjustable Desk | Your Casa Concept

One of the ways to reduce the amount of sitting time while still being able to do your work is by having an adjustable desk.

Favoured for its flexibility to adjust the whole table to your desired height. The adjustable desk is considerably more expensive due to the materials that are needed to fulfill the requirement of a stable desk.

Even though it’s a really trending table this year, not many companies are making them (yet). This explains their cost.

ON TABLE ADJUSTABLE DESK

Literally means an adjustable desk, on top of your regular desk. Anytime you feel like you’ve been sitting for too long, fix the height and carry on your work – standing.

The good ones are made with durable steel bases for good stability, strength and support even when elevated at a height. One that can also smoothly be raised and lowered without fear of your computers falling off.

Because it’s just a subset of your desk, this item is usually much cheaper as compared to an entire adjustable desk.

Listed as Amazon’s choice with more than 85% 5 star reviews, this 32-inch on-table adjustable desk from DEFY DESK is:

  1. Spacious for 2 devices, with extra writing room.
  2. Supports up to 30 lb with ease.
  3. Suitable for a wide range of height – 5’ to 6’3.
  4. Smooth in adjusting, thanks to the pneumatic air cylinders.
  5. Fully assembled, ready to use.

This other design from FEZIBO is perhaps an alternative for those who might prefer your keyboard on a lower height than your screens. There are some small differences to consider between the two.

The rating for the FEZIBO desk is not that far off from Defy’s too. Sure, there is a bit of effort to assemble, but honestly I would say both tables are great choices in their own designs.

At best, the 32’’ desks can comfortably fit a laptop, a computer and keyboard without looking too cluttered. Below here is the rating for FEZIBO’s.

WALL MOUNTED DESK

Another choice of a home office desk is a wall mounted (or a floating) desk. It’s a clever way to sneak in a practical workspace, no matter how small your home office may be. Flexible to position at your desired height, you can fix the table easily, anywhere.

Relying only on screws and brackets, such a build would not be able to withhold heavy load. I would recommend to place only the essential things, like a laptop or computer and perhaps one small desk accessory.

Wall surface plays a huge part in having a durable wall mounted desk. Although possible on irregular surfaces, a smooth wall is better. For the desk to be sturdy, choose the one that has good thickness as well as good quality brackets. Thickness of the desk ensures that it will not bend from weight pressure over time.

I always find industrial desk types are best to fit in most interior designs due to its rustic and neutral colour.

This recommended piece from Amazon has a plank thickness of 12’’, 31’’ long and 14’’ from the wall. It could fit in the necessary items perfectly with good spaces as well. An all in package it comes along with the iron bracket and screws. Relatively easy to assemble.

And should you need storage spaces, add a couple of wall shelves conveniently above your desk. It’s that simple!

WRITING DESK

Last on the list is a typical writing desk. Self explanatory. With so many different sizes and forms, you will be spoilt for choices. The only difference truly is, budget. Range of writing desks can go from tens to thousands of dollars. Marketing tactics aside, some expensive ones are said to have better workmanship with promised longer lifespan.

Maybe you are looking for an upgrade. Not just a table, you want THAT table. If all you need is a laptop for work, you have more flexibility in choosing one that appeals to you aesthetically.

Office desk can be a statement piece of its own and this desk from Manhattan Home Design is one sleek piece to have.

Functionality meets form. Structurally appealing to up your home office game. Prominent style that is wonderful to make you feel more posh and productive in your home office corner.

What I absolutely LOVE about this piece is its cheeky corners that act as open drawers. You can slot in some books or your smaller devices or just keep them clean. There is an additional pull out drawer, totalling up to five storage spaces within the table itself.

The natural wood-grained pattern seals the desk nicely. It is smartly designed to fit in a lot of interior styles, at a compact size at that.

Dimensions are as follows:

  • Overall Product Dimensions: 23.5″L x 47″W x 30″H
  • Width of inner drawer space: 18.5″W

PRODUCTIVITY AT DESK (BEST)

For some, practicality is enough. But in all true honesty, it is human nature to appreciate aesthetically pleasing looking things more. And psychologically, they do get you in the right state of mind. In the case of a work desk, productivity.

It is a balance of functionality and design. Purely a form of motivation and something to feel proud of. Nailing down this item is only the start, a vital one at that.

  1. Awesome post, I didn’t even know there are such options. To be honest, I prefer just to sit on the sofa with my laptop and that’s it. On the other hand, if someone is spending long hours on the laptop then one of your recommendations should come into consideration. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi!

I get what you mean. Honestly that was me but then I grew to be one with the sofa – not helpful at all. Hahaha. Now that I’m at home so much more often, the adjustable desk has proven to be a good investment, productivity wise.

      Glad you like it.

      Cheers,

  2. Hey,

I am so pleased that I came across this article. I have been working from home a lot more than I used to due to the pandemic, and my work has told me that they are supporting more work from home in the future. The reason for that is because our productivity has increased a lot more, and we have been more collaborative as a team.

So, I want to set up a home office and a desk is what I need first. I am certainly an adjustable desk guy, so I will be investing on one of those. I will let you know what the desk is like and how I am finding working on it.

Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work.

    All the best,

    Tom

    1. Hi Tom,

Likewise! Remote work had been around for a while but with the pandemic, it’s a literal mindset shift that this lifestyle can work too.

Glad you are making some changes! Might seem like a small thing but a proper home office setup goes a long way to maintain one’s productivity. Good luck with finding your desk.

      Cheers.

  3. I have a long writing desk which is very useful as a workspace as I have a lot of space available.
But I like the corner desk as an angular layout the most because I like this kind of division of the work surface.
Also, the adjustable table is very attractive and useful, for health reasons because we really sit for too much time.
Thanks for the great presentations of the desks as work surfaces, a very interesting article.
    Friendly greeting,
    Nina

    1. Hi Nina,

Yes, I believe all the desk are designed purposefully. Its a matter of which desk would suit your work scope more. Personally I’ve invested in an adjustable table. The number of hours I spent sitting down in a day is insane. Hahaha.

      Glad you liked the article!

      Cheers.

  4. Hi Sam,
Lovely article about desks. I love the idea of the corner desk as it wraps around the person at work, and that makes it easier to keep many items at close reach. Thanks so much.
    Regards,
    Aps

    1. Hi Aps,

I do agree with you. Essentially it is 2 tables combined together. The division of space would make your workspace more efficient and neat, in a sense!

      Cheers.

  5. Gorjan Spirkoski

I’ve wanted to buy a desk for my office for such a long time now, but I had a hard time choosing the right one.

Many of the desks that I looked at were either too big, too wide, or too small.

However, with that being said, I feel the need to thank you because I felt like you’re recommendations were custom made for myself, and I actually decided to go for the corner desk.

I think it’s going to fit perfectly, and it will definitely help me save some space! (which is always a good idea :D)

    1. Hi Gorjan,

The amount of desks available in the market can get overwhelming, I must say. I can imagine your struggle!

Happy that the article helped you narrow down your choices a bit. The corner desk is indeed a charm.

      Cheers.
